Guiado por su sentido humanitario acoge en su casa a una joven ciega y huérfana a la que instruye valiéndose de imágenes sonoras y metáforas musicales. Los sentimientos casi paternales que movían su buena acción y que se irán transformando en amor, junto con los celos de la esposa del pastor, que ve cómo también su hijo se acaba enamorando de la joven, desembocarán en un desenlace impredecible. Gide refleja en esta narración sus tribulaciones morales lleno de tensión y al mismo tiempo de cierto aliento poético y una enorme humanidad.
