Marruecos ocupa un papel central en la historia contemporánea de España, en buena medida por unas guerras coloniales que influyeron decisivamente en su evolución social y política, y condicionaron desde el golpe de Estado de Primo de Rivera hasta la propia Guerra Civil. En este libro se analizan los conflictos que tuvieron lugar entre 1859 y 1927, jalonados por hitos como la batalla de Tetuán, los desastres del Barranco del Lobo y Annual, o el desembarco de Alhucemas. Se comparan aquí la dinámica y características de esas campañas con la imagen que se transmitió a la opinión pública y las huellas que quedaron en la memoria colectiva española, patentes en narrativas históricas, monumentos y lugares de memoria, conmemoraciones y otros productos culturales.
