Aquest llibre presenta la traducció al català de la tesi doctoral que Irmela Neu va llegir a la Universität Frankfurt am Main el 1985. El treball obtingué el premi Nicolau d'Olwer 1985 de l'IEC. L'autora aborda l'estudi de la doble consciència -lingüística i nacional- en un contínuum temporal, delimitat formalment entre dates -1833 i 1891- mig simbò-liques, mig objectives, del temps en què la llengua, a diferència dels temps anteriors, passà a ser considerada un signe d'identificació de la personalitat, com ho eren i ho havien estat les lleis, les institucions polítiques i administratives històriques i diversos signes -històrics, mítics o simbòlics- que es complementaven i es reforçaven mútuament. La tesi es va publicar en alemany a la revista Estudis Romànics. La traducció catalana és de Ricard Wilshusen.
