Richard Réti (1889-1929) fue uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo entre los años 1910 y 1920. Fundador junto con Aarón Nimzovich del hipermodernismo en ajedrez, aportó a la teoría un enfoque posicional y estratégico, alejado de la especulación material del corto plazo y de las pequeñas ventajas pasajeras. En 1924 derrotó al entonces campeón mundial José Raúl Capablanca, en el torneo de Nueva York, con un sistema de juego que lleva su nombre (la Apertura Réti).
