El poeta i professor universitari Diogo Santiago retorna a Beira, la seva ciutat d’infància, per rebre un homenatge mentre s’anuncia l’arribada d’un cicló tropical demolidor. Allà coneix la Liana, una dona misteriosa que resulta ser la neta de l’inspector de la policia secreta que va detenir el pare d’en Diogo fa més de quaranta anys. Junts, s'endinsaran en una investigació per redibuixar la personalitat d’aquesta figura paterna enigmàtica i compromesa. Alhora, la Liana també descobrirà les veritats de la seva pròpia història, marcada per la mort d’una dona en caure al buit.
