Un dia li truquen de Londres els seus socis de la Buckmaster Gallery, marxants de Derwatt, un misteriós pintor que s’oculta en un remot racó de Mèxic mentre el preu dels seus quadres puja vertiginosament. Tanmateix, un col·leccionista americà sospita que li han venut un quadre falsificat de Derwatt, per la qual cosa urgeix l’aparició del pintor a fi de dissipar sospites...
