Gairebé dos mil·lennis després de la composició d’aquests poemes punyents i extraordinaris, sembla que la humanitat no ha canviat pas gaire: espavilats, lladres, vells lascius, caçadors d’herències, aprofitats, nou-rics, bagasses i un seguit inacabable de personatges ens ensenyen que les més nobles virtuts i els vicis més abjectes no passen mai de moda. Diuen els entesos que per conèixer de debò l’antiga Roma cal llegir indefectiblement el Satíricon de Petroni i els Epigrames de Marcial. Però pareu compte: com passa amb el roser, que ens captiva l’olfacte per l’aroma i la vista pel color de les roses, de tant en tant aquests epigrames us poden sorprendre amb una temible fiblada.
