Per a Leo Strauss, el liberalisme no resol definitivament aquesta qüestió i cal cercar una explicació del seu fracàs en el mateix plantejament de l'emancipador projecte il·lustrat respecte de la superstició. Strauss es va atrevir a encarar-se amb la tensió de l'irresoluble conflicte entre les respectives reivindicacions de la raó i de la revelació, però confrontava el profeta amb el filòsof fent gala d'una subtilesa i d'una discreció que creia que eren la manera pública amb què evitar l'ocàs de la filosofia. I mostrava aquesta subtilesa en la consideració atenta i de vegades sorprenent dels mateixos textos originals.
