El reconeixement, la popularitat i l’èxit del teatre d’Ignasi Iglésias va ser, durant el primer quart del segle xx, una demostració d’afecte de la ciutadania, que veia en el dramaturg del barri barceloní de Sant Andreu un home íntegre, convençut, coherent i generós. El context històric reclamava veus netes i coratjoses. I el «poeta dels humils», en una encertada expressió de Joan Maragall, va saber copsar l’alè de renovació del moment, els reptes dels canvis que la industrialització imposava i els anhels d’afirmació identitària i d’esperança de la cultura catalana. L’obra dramàtica d’Iglésias és l’expressió del compromís amb la veritat i la solidaritat i, alhora, un testimoni de fidelitat amb els ideals de llibertat.
