En esta última, ambientada en el París de la revolución urbanística del barón Haussmann, Aristide Rougon triunfa en la especulación inmobiliaria y su hijo Maxime, un joven Narciso, se convierte en un galán de moda. A su lado, sólo Renée, la madrastra de Maxime, que revive en sus amores incestuosos la tragedia de Fedra, comprenderá el mito del dinero y su cáustico efecto de hastío y deshumanización.
