La Dominique estudia dret a París i s’esforça per no morir-se d’avorriment. A la universitat coneix en Bertrand i comencen a sortir. Ell és un bon noi, sembla que s’entenen bé i fins i tot podria dir-se que s’estimen. Un dia entren a un cafè i es troben amb l’oncle d’en Bertrand, en Luc, un seductor que voreja la quarantena i que té una merescuda fama de frívol i inconstant, tot i ser casat. De mica en mica, en Luc i la Dominique comencen a coincidir, conscients que l’atracció mútua que senten és cada cop més intensa, i també que allò no és altra cosa que un foc d’encenalls, tan efímer com perillós.
