El cazador profesional Sanger Rainsford cae al agua en el mar Caribe y logra llegar a una isla habitada por dos cosacos, el aristócrata general Zaroff y su gigante sirviente sordomudo, Ivan. El anfitrión reta a su invitado a participar en el «juego más peligroso», la caza del hombre, en la que Rainsford servirá de presa. Llevada al cine por Irving Pichel y Ernest B. Schoedsack, productor de King Kong, y rodada de noche en los mismos escenarios de la película sobre el gran mono, "El malvado Zaroff" está considerada uno de los grandes clásicos del cine de aventuras y terror. Orson Welles en el papel de Zaroff la llevó a la radio en 1945 con Joseph Cotten como Rainsford. Ese mismo año Robert Wise dirigió una nueva versión de este relato de Richard Connell muchas otras veces adaptado a la pantalla, la última de ellas en una teleserie de quince episodios protagonizada por Christoph Waltz.
