Mediante ciento tres cartas inéditas de la reina Bona de Polonia y de los más importantes diplomáticos de la corte de Carlos V entre 1541 y 1559, se reconstruyen los preparativos secretos de la reina para abandonar Polonia y retirarse a Bari. Además, se incluyen sendas relaciones de su llegada a Padua y Venecia. Estos documentos muestran la habilidad negociadora y la virtud diplomática de la reina Bona; esclarecen su determinación, la polémica de su viaje y la relación con sus acompañantes, y aportan datos para continuar la investigación sobre el pleito en torno a su testamento y la restitución de Bari a Felipe II.
