En comptes de quedar-se tranquil·lament a casa sense fer res, ells s’estimen més viure tota mena d’aventures: construir un avió i sortir volant a veure món, explorar el fons marí perseguint un tresor, buscar petroli... Però el millor de tot és que, després de tots els embolics en què es fiquen, el pare i els quatre fills —en Casimir, l’Isidore, en Félix i en Ferdinand— sempre tornen a casa per celebrar el final de la peripècia amb un deliciós pastís preparat per la senyora Mellops.
