Quan parlem d’autors mal compresos pels seus contemporanis, el nom d’Italo Svevo és una parada recurrent. «Estúpid, egoista, oportunista, gauche, calculador, sense tacte»: sembla que Ettore Schmitz, l’home de carn i sang que hi havia darrere el pseudònim d’Italo Svevo, feia de bon odiar entre la gent de cultura. També va tenir valedors de la talla de Joyce i Montale, és clar, però el geni de Trieste va morir poc després de la seva eclosió tardana.
