Cap al 1571, amb l’arribada a Catalunya del nou virrei enviat per Felip II, el cavaller Jaume Plagumà és nomenat portantveus del rei, i tindrà com a jutge ajudant el seu amic Pere Joanola.
A través d’un escrivà que el virrei afegeix estratègicament a la cort del nou portantveus, s’encomana a Plagumà d’iniciar la seva tasca just en el punt en què el difunt portantveus l’havia deixada: la investigació d’uns crims de gran ferotgia comesos al llarg de la ruta que uneix Barcelona amb Perpinyà.
Un matí, sortint de la seu barcelonina, el portantveus Plagumà dona almoina a un captaire que els ofereix una estampa amb un rodolí sobre un tal fra Bartomeu que, segons la brama popular, ajuda a solucionar problemes de molta gravetat, sobretot si els afectats són gent adinerada.
La ruta de la mort serà el primer gran repte per a la sagacitat i el sentit de la justícia del nou portantveus, Jaume Plagumà, que s’adonarà tot d’una que la seva vida no serà mai més plàcida.
