Cuando, en 1959, el geógrafo e historiador Amando Melón se trasladó a Berlín para participar en la conmemoración del centenario de la muerte de Alexander von Humboldt, fue testigo del estruendoso silencio que pesaba sobre el papel de España en la vida y obra del gran naturalista alemán. Por ello decidió escribir el presente libro, en el que Melón (1895-1975) narra el viaje que, entre 1799 y 1804, hizo Humboldt por tierras de la América española, una aventura que marcaría la larga vida y amplísima obra de este sabio, y que el autor presenta en una sugerente biografía.
