«Cuando te encuentres con grandes personajes u hombres importantes, prométeme que les dirás: en el nº 16 de la calle Grande-Pohulanka, en Wilno, vivía el Sr. Piekielny…» Roman Kacew era un niño cuando le hizo esta promesa a su vecino, aquel Sr. Piekielny que parecía un «ratoncillo triste». Ya adulto y convertido en escritor con el nombre de Romain Gary, miembro de la resistencia y diplomático, siempre la cumplió: «De los estrados de la ONU a la Embajada de Londres, del Palacio Federal de Berna al Elíseo, ante Charles de Gaulle y Vichinsky, ante los dignatarios y hacedores de futuro, nunca dejé de mencionar la existencia del hombrecillo», cuenta en «La promesa del alba», su autobiografía. Un día de mayo, el azar me llevó delante del nº 16 de la calle Grande-Pohulanka. Ese día decidí emprender la búsqueda de un tal Sr. Piekielny.
