Leyendo el libro el lector adquiere argumentos tanto para poder mirar la arquitectura clásica como para hacer arquitectura moderna.El libro es un conjunto de artículos que Martienssen recogió para obtener el título de doctor en letras por la universidad de Witwatersrand. Los artículos aparecieron entre 1939 y 1942 en el South African Architectural Record, revista de la asociación de arquitectos del Transvaal.
