Quan al cap de vint anys Charles Ryder torna a Brideshead —la imponent mansió de Lord Marchmain, esdevinguda ara un quarter militar—, no pot evitar rememorar aquella meravellosa època de joventut en què va veure l’enorme castell per primera vegada i quedà fascinat dels seus jardins i salons majestuosos i, sobretot, per la singularíssima família que hi vivia. De fet, mai no ha pogut treure’s del cap l’inclassificable Sebastian, ni tampoc Lady Julia, la germana d’en Sebastian, de la qual en Charles es va enamorar obsessivament, i encara menys l’obscura fatalitat que va marcar la vida d’aquella nissaga aristocràtica.
