El nou virrei de Catalunya, nomenat per Felip II, rep la notícia que el degollador de Vallvidrera ha tornat a actuar i cada cop ho fa més a prop del recinte emmurallat de Barcelona. Jaume Plagumà, el portantveus del rei, sempre assistit pel jutge Joanola, serà cridat a resoldre els crims del degollador, un assassí que sembla ser a tot arreu i en tots els estrats socials.
D’altra banda, tot un seguit de familiars de Jaume Plagumà veuran com la seva vida corre perill a causa d’una herència molt cobejada, la de la família Vallserena, que tant pot caure en mans de nobles sense escrúpols com passar a engruixir el patrimoni d’institucions religioses molt cobdicioses.
Tot plegat encara es complicarà més amb l’arribada d’un objecte molt peculiar i refinat: un ull de vidre fabricat a Murano i destinat a una dama, Lluïsa Maria Vallserena, amb un passat tempestuós que molts voldrien esborrar al preu que sigui.
