El moviment esperantista als Països Catalans nasqué i es desenvolupà al mateix temps que ho feia a la resta d’Europa. S’inicià just tombant el segle xx a la Catalunya del Nord i des d’allà penetrà a la resta dels territoris catalans. Amb excepció de les cinc comarques nord-catalanes, fou bruscament interromput per l’esclat de la guerra del 1936 i durant dècades va sofrir els efectes de la repressió. Després ha ressorgit com la resta dels moviments socials i s’adapta als nous temps en què la comunicació es realitza sota l’impacte de les noves tecnologies.
