Les quatre obres que formen aquest volum, La copa del sol i El cap violent (1959), i Plena de pena i El dia del profeta (1961), Joan Brossa les compon a partir d'elements de la vida grisa del seu moment; el seu ús a consciència els converteix en imatges d'alta volada poètica, tot eixamplant la seva realitat i, alhora, els seus signes. Totes quatre peces tenen en comú una profunda consciència ideològica que el lector haurà de descobrir: l'autor no resol el conflicte que (re)presenta, sinó que demana la implicació del lector a l'hora d'arranjar-lo. I és que, talment la tasca del profeta, és feina del poeta promoure la reflexió al voltant d'allò que compartim. Com assegurava a Ricard Huerta anys més tard de les redaccions que ens ocupen.
