Al poble de l’Awafi, a Oman, hi viuen tres germanes: la Maia, que es casarà amb l’Abdul·lah després d’un desengany amorós; l’Asmà, que acceptarà un marit d’acord amb el que estableix la tradició, i la Khaula, que rebutjarà totes les propostes matrimonials mentre espera el seu estimat, que ha emigrat al Canadà. Aquestes tres dones i la seva família seran testimonis de l’evolució de la societat i els costums d’Oman: des d’una comunitat tradicional, on encara existeixen els esclaus, fins a la topada amb el món actual, després d’una lenta evolució durant l’època colonial. Un relat que reflecteix amb gran perfecció el xoc entre la tradició i la llegenda i el món contemporani. És la primera novel·la àrab que rep el Man Booker International Prize (2019).
