Lucas quiere ser detective y un día entra en un museo de pintura en busca de algún misterio por resolver. Algunos cuadros parecen contar historias. Pero, ¿cómo desentrañarlas? Lucas no tiene ni una pista hasta que un ángel sale de una de las pinturas y le lleva tras el rastro de doce obras maestras, explicándole los misterios que se encierran en cada cuadro. Enseguida Lucas empieza a familiarizarse con el apasionante lenguaje secreto de los símbolos artísticos. La divertida narración de Alexander Sturgis se une a los deliciosos dibujos de Lauren Child para iluminar algunas obras cumbre de grandes genios de la pintura: Botticelli, Goya, Picasso, Pollock, Rembrandt y Van Gogh, entre otros.
