Al cel, un comptador indica que la població mundial està a punt d'arribar al seu límit, els 10.000 milions. Tothom treballa de pressa perquè saben que el suburbi menys productiu serà llaurat de dalt a baix. Tothom serà anihilat.
L'única manera de fugir per sempre de la llaurada i deixar de ser un Breu és convertir-se en un Etern i entrar a Ciutat Eterna, on es pot perllongar la vida indefinidament injectant-te una cura.
En Hunter creu que ha trobat una escletxa per resistir les llaurades i infiltrar-se a la ciutat, tot destruint un sistema que els condemna a ser esclaus o adob.
