Basant-se en les revoltes que van tenir lloc l’any 1844 a Silèsia, on els treballadors del tèxtil malvivien en pèssimes condicions sotmesos al despotisme i l’arbitrarietat dels amos —com també passava aleshores a casa nostra—, Hauptmann escriu el primer drama en què una massa insurgida s’erigeix en protagonista. Potser mai no s’han descrit amb tanta precisió com en aquesta peça, considerada un dels moments culminants i no superats del teatre europeu, les perennes injustícies socials, els sofriments de la misèria extrema o la intrepidesa que la fam i la necessitat poden arribar a suscitar en els més desesperats.
