El 11 de julio de 1897, el científico Salomon August Andrée, el ingeniero Knut Fra°nkel y el fotógrafo Nils Strindberg se embarcaron en el Ornen, un globo aerostático con el que pretendían explorar el Polo Norte. La increíble expedición, seguida con apasionado interés por la sociedad sueca de la época, tuvo un desenlace fatal: después de tres días de vuelo, el globo descendió hasta caer en un banco de hielo y los tres intrépidos aventureros subsistieron unos meses hasta fallecer. Probablemente, la aventura del ornen se habría ido desvaneciendo en la memoria escrita y oral europea si no fuera porque, 33 años después, en una nueva expedición ártica, se halló el último campamento de los exploradores suecos. Entre Sus pertenencias se encontraba todo el material fotográfico que había ido elaborando Nils Strindberg y, de repente, la cuasi leyenda del Ornen se hizo imagen.
