Refugiat en els seus problemes, sol i incapaç de fer amics per culpa de la seva timidesa, aconsegueix fer amistat amb un vell professor borratxo que coneix al bar de la fonda on viu. Entusiasmat per treballar a França, on el seu pare s’havia exiliat durant la Guerra Civil, l’Eloi idearà una enginyosa estratègia per anar-hi a viure.
