Gay Talese, pare del Nou Periodisme nord-americà, va transformar el gènere tradicional del reportatge amb descripcions vívides, una observació perspicaç i una rica tècnica narrativa. La crònica que va redactar el 1966 per a Esquire, un dels articles de revista més cèlebres que s'han publicat mai, ens mostra un Frank Sinatra malhumorat, amb un got de bourbon a la mà del qual va fent glops en silenci, abatut per un refredat que li ha fet perdre la veu, com «un Picasso sense pintura, un Ferrari sense gasolina, però pitjor». Entre els altres escrits d'aquesta selecció hi ha la descripció d'una trobada entre dues figures llegendàries, Fidel Castro i Muhammad Ali; una dissecció brillant i aguda de la redacció de la revista Vogue; i la narració d'un viatge a Irlanda amb el bevedor i batusser Peter O'Toole.
