Un oficial escocès que ha estat ferit a Espanya i que necessita un llarg període de convalescència accedeix a convertir-se en l’hoste d’una família que viu en una gran mansió perduda a les muntanyes. Segons li han dit, al casalot, molt decrèpit a hores d’ara, només hi resideixen els últims descendents d’aquesta nissaga vinguda a menys: una mare amb dos fills, Felipe i Olalla. Però abans d’entrar en aquesta mena de castell fortificat, l’oficial haurà d’acceptar una condició prèvia: renunciar a tenir qualsevol mena de contacte amb els membres de la família.
