El Discurso de la servidumbre voluntaria de Étienne de La Boétie (1530-1563) sale a luz en el convulso universo intelectual del protestantismo francés del siglo XVI, que ve en él un panfleto contra la tiranía y la opresión. Al nombre de su autor va ligado el de Michel de Montaigne, quien dejó un testimonio de amistad sin par sobre la obra y la persona de La Boétie. Montaigne fue también el primer eslabón en la recepción de este polémico escrito que se enfrenta a la paradoja desconcertante de que la libertad natural del hombre es extirpada por su propia e inquebrantable voluntad de servidumbre.
