Com a càstig, durant l'estiu, en comptes de passar les vacances prop del mar amb la mare i els germans, s’haurà de quedar estudiant a la finca de la família, en companyia del seu pare, amb qui amb prou feines ha tingut mai tracte. A mesura que passen els dies, en un ambient de calor sufocant, en Bill comença a intuir el caràcter real del pare, que dista molt de la imatge que amaga darrere de les convencions socials.
