Lisístrata, harta ya de no ver a su marido, que está siempre en la guerra, decide reunir a un grupo de mujeres, a las que plantea una solución para acabar con la guerra del Peloponeso: la abstinencia sexual. Las mujeres aceptan y pactan un juramento, el cual rezaba que excitarán a sus maridos, pero no practicarán el sexo. Cada mujer se encarga de propagar el juramento por toda su ciudad, así ningún hombre podrá satisfacer sus deseos sexuales. A partir de ahí los acontecimientos se desarrollan a un ritmo frenético, con un desenlace que no dejará a nadie indiferente.
