El 1959, purgat per l'exèrcit franquista, Jordi Orriols és confinat a la Guinea Equatorial, una terra llunyana i exòtica, últimes restes de l'Imperi espanyol. Allà el sorprendrà trobar-hi una colònia de catalans que cerquen noves oportunitats, que fugen de la repressió de la península o que aprofiten i espremen totalment les enormes riqueses naturals d'aquells indrets. I també hi trobarà l'amor, la infermera Clara Vilaplana, filla d'uns terratinents amb plantacions de cacau. En la vida rutinària de la colònia, la desaparició d'un nadó posarà al descobert una trama abominable, que en Jordi i la Clara investigaran tot i haver d'enfrontar-se a un sistema colonial totalment corrupte.
