Articulada en torno a una doble trama amorosa que se va entrelazando a lo largo de sus páginas, la novela, que obtuvo en 1981 el Premio Nacional de Literatura, constituye en último término una reflexión sobre las relaciones entre la verdad y la apariencia, la historia y la ficción, el autor y su obra, escrita en una prosa que fluctúa entre el barroquismo y la sencillez y que se amolda de forma admirable a la acción a la que da vida.
