Al igual que los pasajeros que utilizaban aquel apeadero no tenían otra salida o ruta posible más que dirigirse a Manhattan o salir de Manhattan, los personajes de la novela se ven abocados a permanecer en la gran ciudad. En términos literarios convencionales, " Manhattan Transfer " podría considerarse una novela histórica panorámica. Sin embargo, es mucho más que eso: Dos Passos logró plasmar la complejísima multiplicidad de la metrópolis incorporando elementos no narrativos de la prensa y la cultura popular y desplegando varias líneas argumentales diferentes, algunas de ellas interconectadas a través de los personajes y otras completamente aisladas en fragmentos discontinuos.
