La oficial Carmen Arregui está encantada ante la perspectiva de una semana de vacaciones durante el Festival de Cine de San Sebastián. Junto a su amiga Miren ha estudiado el programa y seleccionado las películas que van a ver. Además, juntas tienen planes para disfrutar del agradable otoño donostiarra, comer fuera de casa y ver a todos los famosos que se dejen caer por la ciudad. Los planes se truncan cuando es hallado el cadáver de un miembro del jurado y Carmen debe aplazar sus vacaciones para trabajar en el caso. La investigación se mezcla con la vida cotidiana de la protagonista: la convivencia con su marido y los problemas con sus hijos y con su anciana madre, que no se resigna a envejecer. La novela nos muestra la ciudad y su festival desde distintos ángulos.
