L’estiu del 1926, el Frankfurter Zeitung proposa a Joseph Roth un viatge a la Unió Soviètica. Per al periodista, era l’ocasió per conèixer de prop un país per al qual sempre s’havia sentit atret, i que, després de la revolució del 1917, suscitava l’interès de tants intel·lectuals europeus. Atent, curiós, va vagar per les grans ciutats, va seguir el curs del Volga fins al mar Caspi, es va internar entre els pobles asiàtics, i va reflectir les seves impressions en uns reportatges apassionats i sagaços. Uns textos que destaquen no només per la qualitat de l’escriptura, sinó també per la clarividència del testimoni. Un viatge que marca un tombant decisiu en l’evolució personal i política de Roth. Com dirà ell mateix en una carta des d’Odessa: «És una gran sort haver fet aquest viatge a Rússia: altrament no m’hauria trobat mai.»
