En septiembre de 1819, el San Telmo, un navío español con 644 hombres a bordo, encalló en una isla muy al sur del cabo de Hornos en un lugar que jamás nadie había pisado antes. Meses después, un barco inglés encontró el pecio y restos de un campamento sin hombres. Tras comunicarlo a las autoridades de su país, estas decidieron enterrar dicho hallazgo para así adjudicarse, inmerecidamente, el descubrimiento del continente helado. Esta novela narra la posible epopeya de aquellos 644 españoles. Y reivindica un hecho: que España, antes que nadie, llegó a la Antártida.
