Entre su monumental obra, dejó breves aunque hondas páginas sobre la música alemana del siglo XVIII, tan deudora de la Reforma protestante –luterana–, y que abarca el universo cultural que va de Leibniz a Goethe; es decir, desde las Pasiones de Bach hasta la Novena Sinfonía de Beethoven.
