Cuenta la Legenda Aurea de Jaime de Vorágine que, en una de las hambrunas que afligió la ciudad de Myra, el obispo Nicolás (San Nicolás de Bari, c. 270 – c. 343) persuadió a varios navegantes que llevaban trigo desde Alejandría a la corte del emperador para que le cedieran una parte de la carga. Cuando llegaron a Constantinopla los marineros quedaron atónitos al comprobar que el peso del flete no había menguado. Mientras los oficiales del emperador recibían el cargamento intacto, el trigo desembarcado en Myra se multiplicaba prodigiosamente hasta alimentar la ciudad durante dos años.
