Basados en los relatos que contaba a sus hijos en la apartada y agreste provincia de Misiones, en el noreste de Argentina, Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) volcó en los " Cuentos de la selva " (1918), que protagonizan distintos animales (tortugas, flamencos, loros, yacarés, etc.) su indiscutible maestría de narrador, haciendo latir tenuemente en ellos una intención ejemplar. El volumen se completa con siete adicionales («Anaconda», «El regreso de Anaconda», «La insolación», «Yaguaí», «El alambre de púa», «El potro salvaje» y «Juan Darién»), ambientados asimismo en la exuberante naturaleza del continente americano.
