A les acaballes de 1932, ja malalt, Konstandinos P. Kavafis (Alexandria, 1863-1933) repetia a tothom que havia d'acabar encara vint-i-cinc poemes. Aquests poemes, que són en realitat trenta-quatre, juntament amb cinc esborranys, constitueixen el canemàs d'aquest llibre i permeten els lectors d'aprofundir en algun dels grans temes de l'univers kavafià, com l'erotisme o l'herència mil·lenària d'un passat, que, a la seva estimada Alexandria, s'esfondrava irremeiablement. Els eixos principals del món poètic kavafià són una visió tràgica i desesperançada de la vida, l'evocació del passat tardoromà i bizantí de la cultura grega -del qual en fa una lectura nova i profundament original- i l'erotisme dels amors prohibits, gaudits sense miraments, en el marc d'una societat benpensant i puritana.
