Carme Botifoll dóna resposta a un seguit d'interrogants sobre la repressió durant la República, la Guerra civil i la postguerra, amb l'objectiu que, un cop recuperada la memòria històrica, puguin cicatritzar les ferides obertes arran de la violència que es va desfermar en cadascun d'aquells moments. Constata com la repressió es manifestà de manera més brutal en els àmbits rurals, com el Bages -i a Santpedor en concret-, i com els processos repressius van repercutir en els episodis posteriors (1934, 1936, 1939). Una repressió que el nou Estat franquista va desenvolupar de forma regular i metòdica, d'acord amb els seus objectius radicals, que és analitzada detalladament en el llibre i posa en evidència el seu impacte esfereïdor.
