Burton escriu històries sinistres, protagonitzades per nens incompresos i solitaris, que malden per trobar l'acceptació i l'amor dels adults en un món massa cruel. Com és que el pare del Nen Ostra se li acosta una nit de puntetes amb un ganivet? Per què està tant deprimit en Cap de Meló? Acompanyats d'il·lustracions encantadores i imaginatives -obra del mateix Burton-, els poemes evoquen la futil existència d'aquests nens: herois amb una aparença gens ortodoxa però que transmeten una humanitat intensa, brutal, fascinant.
