El territori d'aquests contes és un poble. Un poble travessat per una carretera que mena a Mascabrers, on, en un canyís, han trobat un noi mig colgat de terra, sense un testicle i estrangulat. L'any 1861, al mateix lloc, van fer malbé una noia i la van tirar a un pou. Entre un assassinat i l'altre han passat molts anys i moltes altres vides. El recull es passeja per tots aquests anys i en sec es detura. Els vint-i-nou contes del llibre, en què aquestes vides es troben i es perden, estan arrelats dins el mateix lloc, dins la infància, una ferida oberta, una esgarrapada al cor.
