Rubió s'interessà per una de les pàgines més glorioses de la nostra història, quan els catalans senyorejaren la terra dels déus i dels herois. El llibre recull aquella odissea militar, que no és abordada només des d'un punt de vista històric, sinó també literari i cultural.
