Pero en el huerto que plantan se hunden también las semillas de la discordia entre James y Sadie Goodenough. Mientras James adora las manzanas dulces, Sadie prefiere refugiarse en la sidra. Esas diferencias irreconciliables afectan a sus hijos y obligan al menor de ellos, Robert, a abandonar Ohio y buscar fortuna.
