Mariana, la niña que protagoniza la novela, empieza su relato rememorando los últimos tiempos que pasa en París, donde vive en un ambiente familiar aristocrático, hasta que en 1939 la guerra y la ocupación de la ciudad por el ejército alemán aconsejan alejarse del conflicto y se instala, junto con su madre y su hermana, en México, donde Mariana, curiosa infatigable, va descubriendo todo un escenario riquísimo en personajes, colores, olores, comidas que describe en un cuadro mental al que se suman sentimientos cruzados entre el mundo exterior y su percepción íntima de las cosas.
